Praying for love is a spiritual gift we can ask for whether it comes easily to us or not. Moroni: 7:48 “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, Pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may becoe thsons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him...”
My thought during the sacrament today was of one of our sweet Sister Missionaries who has a little bit of a learning disability. She is absolutely precious and pure, but rather child-like in her conversations and super shy. She and her companion had no one who would listen to their message and they were extremely discouraged. Her companion was experiencing frustration and impatience and asked for a change.
We prayed mightily about it and during this last transfer, the Lord prompted us to put her with another sister who is the most loving sister we could find, though also very quiet. We wondered if they too would have few opportunities to teach because of it, but felt it was right.
It was a miracle transformation! When we interviewed them last week (a few weeks after the change) there was a visible difference! This little girl was on fire! She was electric and bubbly and exuberant! She came prepared to teach me a lesson with such energy and confidence, I thought she could power a rocket with it. I couldn’t believe my eyes, or my ears, as they told me about the dozens of appointments and return apts. they had to teach!
This sister was still child-like, but the loving nature we could always see was now accompanied by boldness and fearlessness. I wondered what had made the difference, but even as I asked it, I knew the answer! It was LOVE! Her new companion had simply and genuinely loved her! That’s it!
With that, she found her voice, her purpose, and it unleashed an inner-strength and confidence that was so obvious and pure- others could feel it too and hade responded to it.
I remarked about the difference to her new companion when I had my time with her. She just smiled and in her quiet little voice said, “I love sis.______!
And she does!
As they walked down the hall together at the conclusion of our time, the older missionary put her arm around the other. Rick came up next to me and we just stood there with tears in our eyes until they disappeared from sight! We were so hopeful this could be a healthy match, but it was so much more! Her companion simply loved her and miracles unfolded. They are teaching more than any other companionship in their district.
We have taught our missionaries that scripture in Mosiah I started with- that love for others Is something we may pray for. I invite you to do the same for others in your circles of influence. Even those who challenge your love. No matter who they are- they are of great value. The love you can show them has the power to pull them out of obscurity and build their confidence.
so thankful for the example of one shy missionary who forgot herself and served her companion with such transforming love.
I am so touched and in awe at this story of unconditional love. What a wonderful example this sister missionary set.
